Tufo's sulphur-carved single-vineyard Greco — Italy's most aristocratic white.
A family rooted in Tufo
Tufo's sulphur-carved single-vineyard Greco — Italy's most aristocratic white.
Perched at 500 metres in the hamlet of San Paolo, the Ferrara family tend one of Campania's most coveted Greco di Tufo crus. Gabriella Ferrara took the reins of the small family estate and turned its single-vineyard 'Vigna Cicogna' into a benchmark for Italian white wine.
The vineyard sits on a sheer hillside of chalk and the natural sulphur mines that give Tufo its name. Hand-harvested late each October and aged on its fine lees, the wine carries a laser-sharp saline tension that few other Italian whites can match.
Benito Ferrara is one of the independent estates Luigi & Jo Di Caprio visit each harvest, tasting from barrel to bottle before a single case ships to our Surrey bonded cellar.
The soil that shapes the wine
Tufo's soils are unique in Campania: the sulphur that once fuelled a mining industry now infuses the Greco grapes with a smoky, gunmetal minerality. The high altitude preserves acidity, so the wine ages with extraordinary grace for a white.

Gabriella Ferrara
We harvest by hand, late, and never rush the lees. Greco di Tufo only reveals its true nerve after it has rested — patience is the whole secret of San Paolo.
