Cantina del Vesuvio
Wine from the tears of Vesuvius — ungrafted vines on black volcanic ash.
A family rooted in Trecase
Wine from the tears of Vesuvius — ungrafted vines on black volcanic ash.
The Cantina del Vesuvio sits in Trecase, on the lower slopes of Mount Vesuvius, where the Maurano family tend centenary vines grown on the volcano's black ash. Because phylloxera cannot survive in loose volcanic pumice, many of these vines are ungrafted — still on their own roots, 80 to 120 years old.
Their Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio is grown on Piedirosso and Aglianico vines rooted in the very lava that destroyed Pompeii. Legend tells that Christ wept over the beauty of the Bay of Naples, and where his tears fell, the vines sprang forth.
Cantina del Vesuvio is one of the independent estates Luigi & Jo Di Caprio visit each harvest, tasting from barrel to bottle before a single case ships to our Surrey bonded cellar.
The soil that shapes the wine
Vesuvius's ash is the estate's whole story. The loose, mineral pumice drains instantly, forcing the vines deep for water, and the volcanic minerals lend the wines a unmistakable note of crushed rock and wild thyme. The ungrafted vines deliver an intensity you simply cannot replicate elsewhere.

The Maurano family
Our vines were here before the last eruption and they'll be here after the next. We farm them by hand, exactly as my grandfather did — nothing has changed on this mountain.
